Why is the Battle for Jerusalem so Fierce?
“ Why are the nations in an uproar
And the peoples devising a vain thing?
The kings of the earth take their stand
And the rulers take counsel together
Against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying,
“Let us tear their fetters apart
And cast away their cords from us!”
He who sits in the heavens laughs,
The Lord scoffs at them.”
In December 2016, the UN Security Council Adopted resolution 2334 by 14 votes, with the United States abstaining, the Council reiterated its demand that Israel immediately and completely cease all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem. It underlined that it would not recognize any changes to the 4 June 1967 lines, including with regard to Jerusalem, other than those agreed by the two sides through negotiations.
Instigated by President Barak Obama and his State Department just before his term of office ended, the US abstained, allowing this resolution to pass. What did this mean?
This resolution meant, according to the UN, the situation that exists on the ground today in Jerusalem and Israel was null and void, Yet, what is the reality on the ground regarding Jerusalem and Israel?
Since 1948 the de facto truth is that Jerusalem was and is the Capital of Israel. The Israeli Parliament is located there, the Knesset, as is the Prime Minister’s office. The Israeli Supreme Court is located there, the President’s residence is there, the Bank of Israel is there, along with the fact that most of the Israeli government’s administrative offices are also located in Jerusalem. The great Synagogue is located there, the Holocaust Museum is there as well.
From the day Israel declared its independence in 1948, the Arab nations attacked Israel, seeking the complete destruction of the new Jewish nation. The battle for Jerusalem was fierce, and when the war finally ended, Jerusalem was split between Israel and Jordan. Israel, ruling West Jerusalem, and Jordan, ruling East Jerusalem with the Old City.
War broke out again in 1967 and Israel conquered east Jerusalem and the Old City, so Jerusalem came under full Israeli control for the first time in 2,000 years.
Jerusalem has been the Capital City of Israel since the time of King David, and even when it ceased to exist as a nation, Jerusalem was still the de facto Capital of Israel.
Yet, the resolution passed by the UN in 2016 was a fantasy that the Muslim nations were trying to make into a reality. They wanted to put Israel in a position where they would be forced to negotiate in any future peace agreement for what they already possessed – Jerusalem.
First and foremost, President Trump’s declaration this past week; “Jerusalem is Israel’s Capital City, and his intentions are to move the US Embassy to West Jerusalem,” destroyed the fantasy of the UN and the Muslim nations, changing the situation to reflect the reality of what exists on the ground in 2017. Consequently, Israel will never have to negotiate in any future peace process for what it already possess on the ground.
Second, contrary to the UN resolution, the facts on the ground since 1967 have changed dramatically, ignoring them is once again a complete fantasy.
The facts on the ground today are the total population of all settlements in the West Bank, Judea and Samaria, was nearly 400,000 in 2014, excluding East Jerusalem. As of December 2015, altogether over 800,000 Israeli Jews resided over the 1949 Armistice Lines (including east-Jerusalem neighborhoods), constituting approximately 13% of Israel’s Jewish population. Today, more than one million Israeli Jews reside over the 1949 Armistice Lines.
Does anyone really believe because the UN passes a resolution that Israel will uproot one million Jews from their homes, schools, synagogues, businesses, and livelihood to create another Muslim terrorist nation in their midst? If they do, they are as divorced from reality as the Palestinians, the EU, the UN, and the Arab League are today.
So nothing in the UN resolution of 2016 reflects the reality of what actually exists on the ground in Israel at the end of 2017. This is one of the primary reasons the so called “Peace Process,” is a fantasy, a non starter, and has not produced anything approaching peace for the past 25 years.
There never will be a real Peace Process until the realities of what exist on the ground are accepted by the UN, the Palestinians, the EU, the Arab League, and the rest of the nations of the world.
Thirdly, the Palestinians and Hamas in Gaza refuse to acknowledge that Israel is a Jewish nation, and refuse to acknowledge that it even has a right to exist as a nation. This fantasy that Israel is not a Jewish Nation, and their adamant refusal to acknowledge Israel as a nation among nations is another reason there is no real peace process, nor will there be until the UN, the Palestinians, and the rest of the Muslim world recognize the right of Israel to exist and accept the reality of Israel as a Jewish nation.
There is another reality at work here in Israel. The control of Jerusalem and the Temple Mount are at the heart of the issue between Israel and the nations. The Jewish Bible declares quite clearly the place where the Jewish Messiah will one day come to rule and reign. He will come to Jerusalem, set His feet on the Mount of Olives, and rule and reign from the Temple Mount forever.
God Will Battle Jerusalem’s Foes
“Behold, a day is coming for the Lord when the spoil taken from you will be divided among you. For I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem to battle, and the city will be captured, the houses plundered, the women ravished and half of the city exiled, but the rest of the people will not be cut off from the city. Then the Lord will go forth and fight against those nations, as when He fights on a day of battle. In that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, which is in front of Jerusalem on the east; and the Mount of Olives will be split in its middle from east to west by a very large valley, so that half of the mountain will move toward the north and the other half toward the south.”
In these prophetic verses we see a day is coming for the Lord when He will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem. He will go forth and fight against and destroy those nations. A gigantic earthquake will hit Jerusalem on the day His feet stand on the Mount of Olives, directly across from the Temple Mount.
This earthquake will be so powerful it will split the Mount of Olives, and the Temple Mount as well, so that half of the mountain will physically move towards the north, and the other half towards the south.. Consequently, whatever structures are standing on the Temple Mount, such as the Alaska Mosque, will be completely destroyed in this earthquake.
Vision of the Glory of God Filling the Temple
Ezekiel 43:1, 4-7
“Then he led me to the gate, the gate facing toward the east, and the glory of the Lord came into the house by the way of the gate facing toward the east, and the Spirit lifted me up and brought me into the inner court; and behold, the glory of the Lord filled the house. Then I heard one speaking to me from the house, while a man was standing beside me. He said to me, “Son of man, this is the place of My throne and the place of the soles of My feet, where I will dwell among the sons of Israel forever.”
There is no ambiguity in the above verses. The Lord, the Jewish Messiah will enter onto the Temple Mount by way of the east gate. The Temple Mount is the exact place where the Lord declares, “This is the place of My Throne, and the place of the soles of My feet, where I will dwell among the sons of Israel forever!”
These verses do not say the Lord will dwell among the sons of Allah forever, rather among the sons of Israel forever.
The Central Spiritual Battle between Jews and Muslims over Jerusalem and the Temple Mount
Thus, these verses set up the existing spiritual battle taking place between the Jews and the Muslims, with the central Issue being:
“Who is God, and who will be worshipped on the Temple Mount, Allah or the Messiah of Israel?”
The Muslim’s have taken these Scripture verses in Ezekiel so seriously they have bricked up the east gate and placed a Muslim cemetery in front of it as well. They actually believe the Jewish Messiah would never walk through a Muslim cemetery and become unclean. And how could the Jewish Messiah possibly enter through a gate that is now bricked up? Surprises Coming!
The East Gate
This spiritual battle regarding who is God, and who will be worshiped on the Temple Mount is the heart and soul of the issue regarding who controls Jerusalem and the Temple Mount.
So understand, the primary spiritual issue regarding Jerusalem is, and will always be: Who is God, and who will be worshiped on the Temple Mount. This is true for all three great religions of our world today, Judaism, Islam, and Christianity.
It is now much easier to understand why the Muslim’s are so desperate to control Jerusalem and the Temple Mount. One of the primary facts regarding Islam is that it cannot co-habitate with any other religion. This fact is evidenced throughout the Muslim nations today.
How many synagogues exist in Saudi Arabia, in Iran, In Iraq, in any Muslim nation. How many Jews live in these nations? The answer is none or an incredibly tiny number. Yet, only in Israel do all three religions co-exist together. Go in any hospital in Israel and you will find Muslims, Jews, and sometimes even Christians sharing the same hospital rooms. Hospitals have both Jewish and Muslim doctors working together. Do you find this in any other Muslim nation?
So the issue that divides Jews and Muslims is not only political, it is not only over the physical land, it is a deep spiritual issue. This is why there is no peace, nor is it likely there will be any peace until the Messiah comes to rule and reign.
One Final Thought
The situation today, the tensions, violence, the kings of the earth raging against Jerusalem as the Capital City of Israel are all prophesied in Scripture. The events we are witnessing today is setting the stage for what is to come!
Jerusalem will be a Cup of Trembling
“Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, When they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem. And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: All those who seek to lift Jerusalem from its rightful place shall be cut in pieces,Though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.”
The stage is being set when all the nations of the earth will be gathered together against Jerusalem. Their purpose, to seek to remove it from its rightful place as the Capital of the nation of Israel. Their fate, “They shall be cut in pieces!”
Yet, Scripture calls us to pray for the peace of Jerusalem! Let us do as the Lord instructs us, to watch and to pray!
“For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent,
And for Jerusalem’s sake I will not keep quiet,
Until her righteousness goes forth like brightness,
And her salvation like a torch that is burning.
The nations will see your righteousness,
And all kings your glory; And you will be called by a new name Which the mouth of the Lord will designate.
You will also be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord,
And a royal diadem in the hand of your God.
