Op-Ed: A Prophetic Middle East War is on the Horizon, the Psalm 83/Isaiah 17 War
“O God, do not remain quiet;
Do not be silent and, O God, do not be still.
For behold, Your enemies make an uproar,
And those who hate You have exalted themselves.
They make shrewd plans against Your people,
And conspire together against Your treasured ones.
They have said, “Come, and let us wipe them out as a nation,That the name of Israel be remembered no more.”
According to Scripture a prophetic war is coming when the enemies of God and Israel will conspire together and declare to all the world, “Come, let us wipe them, out as a nation, that the name of Israel will be remembered no more.”
Perhaps one of the first thoughts to come to mind after reading this would be, “Has this happened?” And if so, when? Or if not, when will it happen?
Because the nation of Israel did not exist for 2,000 plus years between 70 CE (the time of the destruction of Jerusalem, the Temple, and dispersion of the Jewish people throughout the world by the Roman Empire) and 1948, (when Israel once again was declared a nation) the war prophesied in Psalm 83 logically has to occur after 1948.
Just as the Israeli ambassador to the United States, Ron Dermer, said only a few days ago, “His country is closer to a full-blown military conflict along its northern border than people think.”
Today, as in the past, Israel is once again facing a confederation of Arab/Muslim nations on her borders who are seeking “to wipe Israel out as a nation.”
Hardly a day goes by that Iran’s leaders do not declare openly and loudly to the entire world they fully intend to wipe Israel off the map.
While Psalm 83 does not list Russia nor Iran as nations that are directly involved in this war, they are two nations that have been and continue to have ‘long arms’ that reach to the very borders of Israel which will give them access to supporting and supplying in many ways the nations involved directly; namely those bordering Israel and listed in Psalm 83 (Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Gaza, Egypt). As the development of this war continues, this support will loom even larger in the manner of finance, military personnel training, weapons and all manner of war machinery.
One might beg the question, “How do we know that the Psalm 83 war has not already been fought, either in 1948, 1956, 1967 or in 1973?
Isaiah 17 Reveals the Answers to this Question
The answer to this question we believe lies in Isaiah 17, verses 1 & 2, which declares;
The oracle concerning Damascus. “Behold, Damascus is about to be removed from being a city and will become a fallen ruin. The cities of Aroer are forsaken; They will be for flocks to lie down in, and there will be no one to frighten them.”
Civil war has raged in Syria since 2011, and sadly more than 500,000 Syrians have perished in this conflict; yet Damascus has never been removed from being a city, nor has it ever become a fallen ruin in any of Israel’s prior wars.
Secondly, the cities of Aroer, which are the cities that surround Amman, the capital of the nation of Jordan, have never been destroyed nor forsaken in any of Israel’s major wars, nor have they become a place where flocks lie down in peace. Thus, these prophetic verses in Isaiah 17:1-2 are yet to be fulfilled in the future.
Thirdly, the perspective is rarely taught or spoken of regarding these prophetic wars; That it is a distinct possibility the Psalm 83 war and the Isaiah 17 war are one and the same war!
This scenario would explain many of the mysteries surrounding these two prophetic Scriptures. When the verses in Psalm 83, are combined with the prophecies in Isaiah 17, a clear picture begins to emerge regarding this war.
Therefore, because Damascus, nor the cities surrounding Amman Jordan have never been destroyed in their prior wars against Israel, the likelihood is that both Scriptures are referring to one and the same war; A war where these prophesies will soon come to pass, just as written.
The Lineup of Nations in the Psalm 83-Isaiah 17 War
Today, once again, Israel stands alone against the nations seeking her destruction. These are the nations that border Israel beginning with the nation of Lebanon.
Lebanon: The nation that borders Israel to the north is Lebanon, which is home to Hezbollah, a terror organization funded by Iran, and armed with thousands of missiles, all aimed at Israel. By design, Lebanon’s army has fallen under control of Hezbollah, a long arm of Iran, and is now integrated into and controlled by Hezbollah, and thus by Iran.
Hezbollah’s Arms Build up in Lebanon:
With Iranian funding, Hezbollah has now amassed one of the largest arsenals of precision guided ballistic and heavy missiles in the world.
For the past five years Hezbollah has sent a steady flow of fighters into Syria to assist and prop up the regime of Bashar Assad. They have deployed thousands of fighters to this end, as well as continuing to invest heavily in preparations for war against Israel.
Hezbollah has taken over more than 200 villages in southern Lebanon, the Bekaa Valley in eastern Lebanon, and a sprawling command and control centre in southern Beirut. These villages and cities serve as missile storage areas, arms depots, missile launching sites, and command and control centres.
Russia: Today, Russia has moved into Syria, establishing a major naval base in the Syrian port city of Tartus. This naval base is the Russian Navy’s only Mediterranean repair and replenishment base, and because of its location in Tartus, this no longer forces Russia’s warships to make the long trip back to their Black Sea bases through the Turkish Straits. for repairs, rearming, and replenishment.
Syria: Syria has been engaged in a civil war now since March of 2011, where sadly more than 500,000 Syrians have perished. If Assad, Putin, and Hezbollah are willing to kill so many Syrians, Assad’s own people, can there be any doubt of what they are plotting together to do in the coming prophetic war against Israel?
In January 2017, Russia and Syria signed agreements to extend Russia’s control of its base in Tartus for 49 years and give it legal sovereignty over the territory. It allows Russia to dredge, install floating berths, and carry out repair works to expand its capacity to 11 warships, including nuclear-powered ships.
In addition Russia has established an air force base located south-east of the city of Latakia, Syria. This base enabled Russia to literally help destroy ISIS, and wrest large parts of Syrian territory captured by ISIS back under the control of the Assad government.
These events have led to a Syrian, Russian, and Iranian axis confronting Israel in Syria as well as Lebanon. Russian advanced radar can now see into Israel and track the movements of Israeli fighter aircraft as they take off from their bases.
Russia has also installed their most advanced surface to air missile defence systems to protect both their naval and air force bases in Syria. Should war breakout they will undoubtedly be used against Israeli aircraft.
Iran is now on Israel’s Border with Lebanon and Syria
Iran: Under a peace agreement with Russia and Syria the Iranian’s have been allowed to commence building military bases located near Israel’s borders. Israel has made it crystal clear to both Bashar Al-Assad of Syria, Vladimir Putin of Russia, and to the Iranians as well, they will completely destroy these bases once construction begins.
The Iranians have also begun construction of a military base not far from Jordan’s northern border. Undoubtedly, Iran’s next target will be to destabilize and overthrow the government of Jordan. This would enable Iran to set up another front against Israel on her eastern border.
Jordan: Remember what Scripture declares regarding Jordan’s Capital City, Amman, along with the cities surrounding it, “The cities of Aroer are forsaken; They will be for flocks to lie down in, and there will be no one to frighten them.”
In light of this prophecy, it is highly likely Jordan will either join in the coming prophetic war just as it has in past conflicts, or the government will be overthrown by Iran, and become a vassal state who will come against Israel in the Psalm 83-Isaiah 17 war.
Gaza On Israel’s Southwestern Border
Life in Israel under Hamas Rockets Launched against Israelis
Gaza: In 2005, Israel forcibly removed all of the Jewish people from their homes, businesses, schools, farms, and livelihood in Gaza. Not long after the Israeli departure, a Muslim terrorist organization, Hamas wrested control of Gaza from the Palestinian Authority.
Once in control, they began to arm themselves with rockets, mortars, and they raised up thousands of trained terrorist with one goal – the complete destruction of the nation Israel.
Since taking over in 2006, Hamas has fired thousands of rockets at Israeli towns, cities, schools, and military establishments killing and injuring many innocent Israeli men, women, and children.
Today, Hamas’ primary funding, military supplies and support is provided by no other than Iran. This has led to numerous and continuous military conflicts between Israel and Hamas.
Hamas has declared it will never accept the existence of Israel as a nation, and will never cease to seek the complete destruction of the nation of Israel.
Attempts to reconcile with the Palestinian Authority are doomed to failure, as it is highly likely Hamas will never agree to disarm, or abandon the struggle against Israel.
Summary and Conclusions
Psalm 83 lists the nations who will come against Israel in the coming war. These nations are the nations that border Israel.
The verses in Isaiah 17 speak clearly of the complete destruction of the city of Damascus, which will cease to exist as a city.
The prophecy in Isaiah 17 prophesies that the Capital city of Jordan, and the cities around it are completely destroyed and become pastures for sheep and goats.
Lebanon is obviously a combatant, and it suffers great loses because it has aligned itself with Hezbollah.
Gaza will be completely destroyed.
Egypt is not directly addressed in these verses. Egypt has the largest and most powerful army in the Middle East, and has fought four wars against Israel in 1948, 1956, 1967, and 1973. Perhaps by God’s mercy, Egypt will have the good sense not to come against Israel in the coming prophetic war.
The War of God and Magog
The prophetic war that follows the Isaiah 17-Psalm 83 war is prophesied in Ezekiel 38-39. This is called the War of Gog and Magog and it is fought against Israel.
In chapter 38 of Ezekiel, the nations named as coming against Israel are listed. However, the most astonishing fact in the listing in Ezekiel 38 are those nations who are not named as coming against Israel.
The nations not listed are, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, and Gaza. Why are they not listed? These nation are the nations on Israel’s borders. In any war, they would be the first one at the party to destroy Israel. So why are they not listed?
They are not listed because they are destroyed in the Psalm 83-Isaiah 17 war, or perhaps in Egypt’s case they had the good sense to stand down and not come against Israel.
One final thought. In the Gog and Magog war, Iran plays a very prominent role, as well as Russia, Turkey, and a host of other Muslim nations. Interestingly, Israel must fight in the Psalm 83-Isaiah 17 war, while in the Gog and Magog war, Israel does not fight this war! The God of Israel fights the war on behalf of Israel and He wins.
What is the difference when men and nations fight wars, verses when God fights a war on behalf of Israel? The difference is God takes no prisoners when they come against Him and His anointed.
Prophecy against Gog and his Army of Invaders is
“And you, son of man, prophesy against Gog and say, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “Behold, I am against you, O Gog, prince of Rosh, Meshech and Tubal; and I will turn you around, drive you on, take you up from the remotest parts of the north and bring you against the mountains of Israel.
“I will strike your bow from your left hand and dash down your arrows from your right hand. “You will fall on the mountains of Israel, you and all your troops and the peoples who are with you; I will give you as food to every kind of predatory bird and beast of the field. “You will fall on the open field; for it is I who have spoken,” declares the Lord God.” Ezekiel 39:1-5
Notice where Gog’s army falls and is destroyed – On the Mountains of Israel. Where are the Mountains of Israel? They are Judea and Samaria, the heart land of Israel. This area is also called ‘The West Bank,’ which is the very land the Palestinians claim today. Obviously, it is not their land, it belongs to God and to those He gave it to as an everlasting possession – The Israelites!
“I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your descendants after you. “I will give to you and to your descendants after you, the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, (Israel), for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.”
Make no mistake about it, Israel will suffer greatly in the coming Psalm 83- Isaiah 17 war; yet, Israel will survive because of God’s faithfulness and His covenant promises to give the Jewish people all of the land of Israel as an everlasting possession.
The War Between the Coming War
Consequently, we are living in a time today which can be called, The war between the coming Wars.
A huge prophetic war is on the horizon in the Middle East. The Psalm 83/Isaiah 17 war can break out at any time. The nation players are now all in place, the rockets and missiles are now in place, the armaments and funding are all in place, and know and understand it will take place in God’s perfect timing.
Pray for Israel, and pray for the peace of Jerusalem!
